How to Use Magic Metallics
Magic
Metallics are not a faux finish. You are creating a real
metal finish. Metallic finishes are not paint, but a coating
that has actual ground metal particles suspended in an
acrylic sealing compound. The metal particles adhere to the
surface and cause that surface to look as if it is actually
made of metal.
Basic
Information:
Always apply Magic Metallics to a clean, dry surface. For
ceramics and plaster, carefully wipe off any loose dust. For
wood, make sure all sawdust is wiped away. If using on
fabric, wash first to remove sizing. Clean old metals
thoroughly; wash new metals and dry completely.
Stir and shake products well, as the heavy metal particles
tend to sink to the bottom of the bottle. Apply products
with a brush, sponge, rag or foam brush.
Apply one coat and allow to dry. Apply the second coat and
while it is still wet or damp, apply the Patina of your
choice.
All the Metallic finishes except MM-106 Steel Metallic make
beautiful metallic brushstrokes without thinning the
product. If you add a Patina to the Metallic Finish before
applying, you can watch the stroke patina as it dries.
Metallic finishes can be force dried with a fan or hair
dryer, but Patinas need to dry naturally for maximum
oxidation.
The MM-204 Purple Tint does not oxidize but is used as a
tinting color to provide accents and color
variety to your patina
Basic
Patina Application:
Shake the Patinas before using.
Apply the first coat of Metallic and allow to dry for at
least one hour.
Apply a second coat of Metallic and let dry to the "tacky"
stage. While still wet or tacky, apply one or more colors of
Patina. Allow time for the Patina to oxidize before adding
more Patina. If the desired look has not developed after
30-45 minutes, apply more Patina. Patinas should be applied
while the metallic is still damp. (Note: MM-103 Dark Bronze
Metallic will still Patina even when dry.)
A little Patina will go a long way! Remember, you can always
add more. If when dry, you find you have more patina than
you want, dampen a paper towel or moisten a green grit pad
and gently rub over the surface to remove the excess. You
can remove all of the patina or just lighten it. You must
allow the surface to dry in order to see the true final
color.
Allow to dry thoroughly and apply one to two coats of any Magic Metallic Sealer to seal the piece.
Until the piece has been thoroughly sealed, the piece will
continue to oxidize. Allow each coat of sealer to dry
completely before applying the next coat.
Basic
Rust Application:
To obtain a rusted look, pat on two to three coats of MM-106 Steel
Metallic, allowing to dry between coats. While the last coat is
still wet, apply MM-305 Rapid Rust to the area to be rusted.
