About Us
Mayco Colors was founded in Los Angeles in 1951 by Irwin P. Mayen an Austrian immigrant who came to America to escape the ravages of the war in Europe. As the post-war economy in Europe improved, Mr. and Mrs. Mayen longed to return home and in 1954 sold their company to Robert Umhoefer, a young man with a Ph.D. in Chemistry. Bob Umhoefer brought a deep sense of caring for quality and reliability to Mayco's products and was very innovative in developing hundreds of underglazes and glazes during his years at Mayco's helm.
In the early 70's, the company built a second factory in Hilliard, Ohio. Eventually the California division was closed and all manufacturing and distribution was consolidated at the Ohio plant. At the end of 1997 Mayco purchased the ceramics division of Ceramichrome, Inc., a Kentucky based company. The best products from Mayco's and Ceramichrome's product lines were combined under the Mayco brand name.
Magic Metallics were developed in 1998 by Chemtek, Inc. Chemtek, a manufacturer of architectural coatings, believed that there might be an interest in these products in the hobby market due to the unique nature of these finishes. At their first trade show (NAMTA), these products caught the attention of Mayco, a leader in the hobby ceramics market. The "magic" of the products is that they create a real finish rather than a faux finish. Metal flakes suspended in an acrylic sealing compound actually oxidize (patina or rust) when exposed to their oxidizing compounds.
In October of 2001, Chemtek made the decision to discontinue operations and closed their doors for business. Chemtek offered Mayco the opportunity to purchase the formulas. Mayco, recognizing the unique properties of this product line, purchased the formulas and equipment. In January of 2002, Mayco began manufacturing the products, now branded Magic Metallics, at their factory in Hilliard, OH. At the 2004 HIA Convention, Magic Metallics were introduced to the decorative painting and craft market.
Today Coloramics (d.b.a. Mayco Colors) is located in a 72,500 square foot plant in Hilliard, Ohio, and sells through an extensive distribution and catalog network in the U. S. and exports to 30 countries. Mayco's innovative products are a source of inspiration to all sorts of artists, ceramic hobbyists, contemporary paint your own pottery studios, art educators, decorative painters, potters and finished ware producers. Mayco's color line includes acrylic stains, the most extensive palette of glazes and underglazes available and many specialty products including the unique Magic Metallic family of products. Mayco also produces plaster molds for the commercial producers of greenware and bisque.
