What’s the magic in Magic Metallics?
Magic Metallics contain actual metal particles suspended in an acrylic sealer. Magic Metallics are non-toxic metal finishes that can give any paintable surface the look and feel of real metal - not faux. Unique aged finishes can be created using the patina and rust oxidizers. The metal particles in the metallics oxidize just like the metals would in nature when exposed to air and water – Magic Metallics just do it faster.
Metallics
Magic Metallics are not a faux finish. Metallics contain real metal particles
suspended in an acrylic sealing compound. The metal particles adhere to
the surface and cause the surface to look as if it is actually made of
metal. Available in six different metal finishes.
Patinas & Rapid Rust
Apply patinas over wet Metallics to age the metal particles. Just like
nature, only faster. Use Rapid Rust only with Steel Metallic. Purple Tint
does not patina but is used to add color and interest to your Magic Metallic
creations.
Sealers
Use to seal the metals once they have dried. Until it has been sealed
completely, the piece will continue to oxidize. Available in Gloss, Satin
and Matte.
Surface Primer
Use to seal or prime any surface before painting. This will help the Metallics
to better adhere to glass or metal surfaces.
Undercoats
Use these acrylics as a base under metallic color for maximum brilliance
and ultimate coverage. Available in six colors.
Spritzer Caps
Can be screwed onto the Patinas and Rapid Rust for an easy spray application.
Brush Cleaner
Will clean even the toughest paint buildup in brushes.
How to Use Magic Metallics
1. Prepare the Surface
The surface should be clean, dry and free of any dust particles. Use MM502
Matte Sealer or MM516 Surface Primer on surfaces that need to be sealed
first like wood, metal, glass, ceramic, etc.
2. Paint the Surface a Dark Color
Using Magic Metallic Undercoats. This is not a necessary step; however,
Magic Metallic colors are more brilliant when applied over any dark color.
3. Shake and Stir Colors
The heavy metal particles in each bottle tend to sink to the bottom. To
ensure desired look, thoroughly shake and stir colors.
4. Apply Magic Metallic color
Using a brush, sponge, rubber stamp, rag or foam brush, apply at least
2 coats of Magic Metallic color. Use a hair dryer to speed up the drying
time of the first coat.
5. Patina Application
While the second coat is still wet, apply a Patina by brushing, sponging
or spritzing. The Magic Metallic colors need to be wet for the patina
to oxidize, with the exception of the MM103 Dark Bronze, which will patina
even when dry. The patina causes the metallic to oxidize just as they
do in nature only faster. Allow the surface to oxidize overnight. Steel
is the only one that will rust.
6. Seal with Matte Sealer
Apply two coats of MM502 Matte Sealer. This stops the oxidation process.
Then a varnish of your choice can be applied, if desired.
Create Real Rust
1. Apply Sealer
If working on glass, spray first with MM-516Surface Primer or brush on
MM-502Matte Sealer so the Steel will adhere better.
2. Apply Steel
Brush or sponge on two to three coats of MM-106 Steel Metallic. While
the last coat is still wet, start step 3.
3. Apply Rapid Rust
Spritz, brush or sponge it on. Steel must be wet when MM-305 Rapid Rust
is applied. The change will begin within 20 minutes. Wait 24 hours for
the rust to completely develop. Then seal with MM-502 Matte Sealer.
Magic Metallic Tips
• Metallic products can be applied with a brush, sponge, rag or foam brush. The Patina products can be brushed on or “spritzed” using the MM-600 Spritzer Cap which screws right onto the 2 oz. bottle.
• All the metals are intermixable to form new metallic colors except the MM-106 Steel Metallic. You can also mix the Metallic colors (except for Steel) with acrylic stains to create new colors, however, the acrylic should be no more than 25% of the mixture.
• All the Patinas can be mixed with each other. A favorite mixture is MM-200 Verde Green Patina with MM-201 Aqua Blue Patina.
• Always refer to individual jar labels for specific information pertaining to individual products.
• The Patinas will also work on any ferrous metals. Try filling a clean stamp pad with Patina and using rubber stamps to print onto thin copper sheeting that has been thoroughly cleaned with vinegar and allowed to dry and only the design will patina.
• MM-106 Steel Metallic needs to be thoroughly stirred and shaken often and patted on in a fairly heavy application at least twice to get a really good “rust” with the MM-200 Verde Green Patina or the MM-202 Green Patina. Use these to rust the Steel Metallic when you need a product with no health caution warning.
• All the Metallic finishes except MM-107 Steel Metallic make beautiful metallic brushstrokes without thinning the product. If you add a patina to the metallic finish before applying you can watch the stroke patina as it dries.
• For a bigger project such as a wall, place puddles of metallic finishes on a large palette and spritz on one or more of the patinas randomly. With a large sponge, pick up color from different puddles in no particular order and sponge on. Add metallic finishes and Patinas to your palette as needed keeping no particular pattern. When you are done, wash up with soap and water and go have a cup of coffee. Come back to see a wall with a beautiful patina finish.
• It is possible to do design work over the sealed surface with acrylics or pen and ink.
• If you finish a piece and you really do not like the look achieved, all is not lost. Simply apply a coat of MM-502 Matte Sealer, allow it to dry and then redo the piece.
• The MM-502 Matte Sealer is needed to protect the patina/rust finish. Any brush-on sealer, spray sealer or varnish should be applied only after the piece has been sealed with MM-502 Matte Sealer.
• All products clean up with mild soap and water, however, AC-525 Brush Cleaner is excellent for this purpose.
