What are Translucent Oil Based
Stains?
Translucent Oil Based Stains are a rich creamy concentrated
translucent formula of colors generally used for antiquing pieces to create
depth and dimension. These colors offer the hobbyist an expanded range
of decorating possibilities. Their formulation allows easy application
and gives the decorator greater control when highlighting and antiquing.
Used singularly or in combination, they add multiple effects for the completion
of acrylic stain pieces.
How do you antique with Translucent Oil Based Stains?
Use a suitable sized brush for the piece. Working in sections, apply a
coat of translucent color, covering the detail areas well. With a soft
cloth (T-shirt material works well) remove excess color from high areas
to achieve your desired effect.
Does the brush I use make a difference?
Yes, when drybrushing and working with acrylic stains, it is very important
to use a brush specifically made for that type of decorating. We suggest
using Mayco's Acrylic/Dry Brushes. For optimum cleansing and care, clean
brushes immediately after using with AC-525 Brush Cleaner and warm water.
Always store brushes with the bristles facing upright.
Are Translucent Oil Base Stains intermixable?
Yes, Translucents can be intermixed to broaden the palette.
Is a final sealer required?
No, Mayco's translucent formula doesn't require a topcoat sealer. For
durability or a specific look, a spray or brush on sealer may be applied.
When doing techniques requiring multiple layers of Translucents, coat
piece with a light misting of a spray sealer after two layers of color;
this will set the previous colors for further decorating.
Are there any other ways to use Translucent Oil Based Stains?
Besides general drybrushing techniques, tinting and rouging are two additional
ways to use stains. These methods of decorating are similar in look but
apply differently depending on the surface.
• Tinting is a thin coating of color, applied with a soft brush,
using a light touch.
• Rouging is a light coating of color applied with a cloth in a
patting or pouncing motion. This may also be done with a dry brush.
Can Translucent Oil Based Stains be used over a fired glaze?
Yes! There are several glaze surfaces that offer unlimited decorating
techniques with Translucents, such as Astro Gems, Stroke & Coat and
any gloss or matte glaze sealed with several coats of AC-516 Porcelain
Mist Spray.
